Kandy heart surgeons perform historic surgery

A heart surgery on a patient who was awake (Awake – Non-intubated open heart surgery under thoracic epidural anaesthesia) has been successfully completed by heart surgeons in the Kandy General Hospital.

This patient while on surgery had been made to listen to music and allowed to talk with the doctors.
Heart specialist Dr G Ghandhiji, Anaesthetist Dr Vishva Uduwela, A S P Wasala and others carried out this surgery on Mahinda Galliyedda, 38, in the Gampola area.
This surgery was conducted by using a cardio pulmonary bypass machine.
The patient was allowed to speak to his relations after ten minutes of his operation.
Under the new methods only the area opening for the surgery was given anaesthesia, according to Dr Gandhiji. This was the first time this type of heart surgery was done in Sri Lanka.
